Life in two Indian villages in northeast India in the province of Orissa. One is a fishing village, the other a farming community. The film begins with small log boats putting out to sea. Nearby a farmer sows his grain by hand and oxen pull a harrow to break up the lumpy soil. Other farmers cut rice with hand sickles and separate grain on a threshing floor. Ginger roots are gathered, cooked and dried. A peasant woman makes an offering of flowers. A small child grinds kernels of grain by hand between two flat stones. Bricks are made and a house is constructed. When the boats return with the catch, nets are mended and prepared for the next day (1984 IFF catalog).
