Jungle Farming

Alternative Title: N/A

Series Title: Indians of the Orinoco

Summary:

Each family in the Makiritare village has its own field — sometimes an hour’s walk away.  The farming requires much cooperative work, and often men from nearby villages are asked to help. After the men use the slash and burn technique to clear the jungle away, the women simultaneously harvest and plant manioc roots, pineapples, chili peppers, bananas, and plantain. Since they live near the equator, the Makiritare can farm year round.
