Modern Rome and her people- with all their zest for life- are captured in this lively unnarrated film. It first reflects on the city's long past. These reflections are rudely shattered as time is updated to the Rome of today: a magnificent city choked with traffic, afflicted with grave pollution and environmental problems, but also a city of charming outdoor markets, beautiful parks, monuments and fountains. In an unobtrusive way, the camera roams the city capturing vignettes of Roman life and eventually alights on three sets of people from widely different backgrounds. The film also records two major forces of Italian life: politics and the church. Food, wine and music are fundamentally important to an Italian's enjoyment of life and a typical wedding reception give full expression to all these. A mixture of everyday scenes- quiet old streets, busy boulevards, small and grand piazzas, shops, cafes and well know sights like the Coliseum, Vatican City, and the ruins of the Caracalla Baths where an opera is in rehearsal.
