Summary:

The Allam family is part of a fortunate minority in Egypt. It consists of an oil engineer, a farmer, an architect, and a construction engineer. On grandfather Mahmoud Allam's 78th birthday, there is a family party. Through the eyes of his children and grandchildren we see some of the changes that have taken place in Egypt during his lifetime: the Aswan Dam, a series of costly wars, the re-opened Suez Canal, oil exploration in the Red Sea, a movement to the cities and resulting urban problems. In short, many of the important factors which make up modern Egypt.
