To get to the remote Makiritare village where no filmmaker had ever been, cameraman Hermann Schlenker took a long exhausting journey up the Orinoco and Padamo rivers. At one point, half his porters (whom he had paid with knives, beads, and fishhooks) deserted him. The film shows the difficulty and dangers of travel in an area of thick jungle and rushing rivers.
