Humberto da Silva, a chemical engineer, and his wife, Lucia, a social worker, live with their two sons in the historic city of Bahia (or Salvador) in northeastern Brazil. As we observe them at work and enjoying leisure time with their friends, we get a view of middle class life in Brazil today. When we follow Lucia during her working day, we also see what life is like for the less privileged. Family life is important and the da Silvas shop, cook, enjoy the beach and celebrate a local holiday together. The vast Petrobas oil complex gives a glimpse of Brazil's rapidly expanding economy and the working conditions in a large plant. Winner of the 1978 Chris Plaque. (IFF catalog)
