Coconut Tree, The

Series Title: Pacific Island Life

Summary:

Aside from providing the island's only export, the coconut palm is also essential for the people's immediate livelihood. Rainfall being the only fresh water source, coconut juice, especially sweet and refreshing from the green fruits, is the only other available drink. The riper coconuts are used for their meat and for storage. Even domesticated animals are fattened on coconut. The shells, visible everywhere, become filters, cups and bowls. The husks serve as fuel and as a source for string. (IFF catalog)
