Each family has its own field, usually on one of the more fertile islands. Teheilau and his family take a boat trip to attend to their plot where they grow taro and turmeric. Turmeric is used as spice as well as body-paint. Taro, a starchy root, is grown on top of the coral in a shallow layer of soil.
