Magic Rites: Divination by Chicken Sacrifice

Alternative Title: Divination by Chicken Sacrifice

Series Title: African Village Life

Summary:

Any study of the role of religion in the life of an African tribe will find this unusual and carefully observant film invaluable, especially if used with “Divination by Animal Tracks.” The Dogon religion requires a steady practice of living animal sacrifice to insure a good relationship with the divine forces. This film details the most common sacrifice — the ritual execution and devouring of the chicken. When the dying fowl is thrown to the ground, it is considered a good omen if it lands with its feet in the air.
